Week 6, Rhymes With Hoot

Lois says:

Rhymes with Hoot - How about a flute.? I learned to play the flute when I was 10 years old and have always loved flute music. I hadn't played in years, but I picked up this new flute a few years ago and all I need to do now is practice, practice, practice. :)

As I was photographing this, I held up some sheet music so that the music notes reflected in some of the flute keys. In editing, I did some standard LR edits and then added the Infrared Film filter from Nik Color Efex Pro, for this effect.

I headed for the nearby health complex for this shot, and I used my husband as a model. The complex has a lot of lines that add interest. I also thought it was cool that I could capture the circular lights on the ceiling inside. Settings were: 1/15 sec, f/22, ISO 100.

I didn't have a lute, so my some of my of Native American flutes had to suffice. I tried various options - but it seemed this straight on allowed more individual exploration and none stood out more than the others.

Sole Provider by Ricky Tims

I remember the day. It was at the AQS Show in Paducah and I had migrated over to the shopping mall where vendors lined the interior halls. I stumbled on a booth selling batik with all sorts of painted designs and I fell in love with these masks. If you are a quilter, you know you don’t need a reason to buy it if you love it. I just wanted to have it - so I bought it.

Time went by and many times I would take out the batik mask and study it, touch it, enjoy it. I kept thinking to myself there must be a way to use this. I was exploring and growing with my improvisational style of patchwork…aka Quilting Caveman Style. I decided to just start with the face and build around it. I had no clue where I was going or how it would turn out. In the end, I loved what transpired.

The title is a play on words. It’s not Sole Provider, but rather Soul Provider, as if this is some sort of an ancient god or goddess that bestows life and inspiration. Viewers are welcome to make their own interpretations.

Elaine says:

I photograph this little Japanese Maple tree a lot. We recently had another good size snowstorm, so the snow is about up to the bottom branches. One thing about winter - you really can see just how wonky those branches are with their twisting and curling around. Basic LR edits and then made it B&W. 1/2500@f8; 98mm, ISO500

Quite the week, as I am recovering from COVID. I managed to get out and break a non-fever related sweat moving some firewood around. That gave me the idea for this photo. My hound dog was z bit confused as I was sitting there taking the shots that led to this submission. :)

So believe it or not there’s no real magic trick here. The pencil I purchased in December and it’s called a Texas size pencil so simply by laying that huge pencil next to my small scissors the scissors got really tiny. I blended that image on top of a white counter with a multicolored fabric in an app called Image Blender. Then I took that over into Prisma and used the Wild filter but I reduced it to almost negligible just to give a little color. Edited in Prisma app with Wild

Ricky says:

I first heard the word “wonky” in England when I was teaching my caveman improvisational piecing technique For Quilters. Subsequently many years later, I did an exchange for one of my wonky quilts with a potter who did wonky teapots. He used my wonky design on this wonky teapot. It doesn’t get much more wonky than this. I used my iPhone. It’s been an intense week. I just competed a two-day online quilt class. Eliciting but exhausting. Zzzz

found a spring bouquet of flowers at Dollar General for only $5. I brought them home and I've been enjoying their pastel loveliness on my dining room table. The flowers in the bouquet were pink, aqua and yellow, but I focused on the stem of pink flowers for our "Tickled Pink" challenge.

Ricky says:

Three orchids opened this week at home. This particular plant had never bloomed. It was in bad shape when I got it over 2 years ago. So.. a miracle! Did you first see three buds - or three blossoms? I layered a texture and blended it - then erased to keep the beautiful texture of the flowers. In Topaz I also used a filter, but then again, erased leaving the flowers with minimal overlay.

Shock Wave by Ricky Tims

This fun and colorful quilt was originally a miniature quilt made from 3” blocks when I was a baby quilter in the early 90s. Over the years various magazines wanted to pattern the quilt but they all felt it would require too many pages. A few years ago I took that job upon myself and created the pattern which is simple, concise, and easy-to-follow.

For kicks and grins, look at the position of the colors in the large triangles and watch those colors flow diagonally across the quilt. In the upper right the lime green is the large triangles and that flow of color goes from upper right to bottom left. But if you look at the lime green in the bottom left, in the small triangles, and follow the flow of small triangle's color to the upper right, you’ll see that flow of color is is the same - it's just flowing the opposite way. In essence…two waves crashing into each other.

The organization of colors is super simple and described in the pattern. Get the digital download now for instant gratification and save on shipping.

Here is the original little miniature of Shock Wave from 1992 using 3” blocks.
