Now, I know a lot of quilters get nervous when things lean too far into the “artsy” side of quilting, but they feel right at home with traditional blocks. To my delight, it took off like wildfire, and the quilts that came out of it were nothing short of remarkable.

Here’s how it works: you start with a theme block—something you design yourself—then you surround it with traditional block fillers. The secret sauce, though, is in your fabric choices. Every square and triangle is like a brushstroke on a canvas—a dab of blue here, a flicker of orange there. Piece by piece, you’ll build your blocks in the tried-and-true way, but when it all comes together, the colors will flow into a scene that’s uniquely your own.
