 Michael Michalski's outstanding quilt, Prairie Window, won Ricky Tims' Five Fabric Challenge 2011, and now is available as a stand alone pattern as well as a complete kit here at Ricky's online store. Michael says he chose colors that spoke of the western prairie when he purchased his five Ricky Tims Hand-dyed fabrics. Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright's architecture, he spun a variety of dimensional elements into quilt that has both traditional and contemporary appeal. | A Note From Ricky |
| I've just returned from a visit to Rosebud and Pine Ridge Indian reservations in South Dakota. While there I had the opportunity to meet Elsie, a seventy-six year old Lakota quilter who uses denim to make quilts. Selling these quilts helps with living expenses. It was such a joy to visit with Elsie and see her work. Justin and I purchased the two quilts that she had just completed. She was thrilled beyond words. She told us she would use the money to help her grandchildren who had just lost their mother a short while ago. I look forward to seeing Elsie on a return visit. We left her a few boxes of donated fabric so she could continue quilting and providing for her family.  The Lakota People are known for their star quilts. They are made and given throughout life especially during rites of passage, births, weddings, deaths, and vision quests. I saw several star quilts during my time on the reservation, but this one in particular caught my eye. It is on the Rosebud reservation, and it is obvious that the rosebud applique motifs were a tribute to the name "Rosebud."  Justin and I have chosen to support One Nation Walking Together, a charitable organization that provides clothing, food, shelter repairs, and their efforts serve many tribes throughout the western United States. Thanks to the generous donations of quilters at our last Ricky Tims Super Quilt Seminar, we were able to raise $6000 and donate it to the organization to help with the expenses of trucking supplies to the reservations throughout the western United States. |

 We're sending out a big WHOO-HOO to the Mississippi Valley Quilt Guild who hosted the Ricky Tims Super Quilt Seminar in Bettendorf, Iowa. Many thanks as well to everyone who came from far and wide to attend. We had a blast and we hope you did too! Check out the cool pink cowboy hats that the volunteers wore. Known as "the ultimate learning experience for quilters", attendees enjoy three days of entertaining instruction by Ricky Tims, Alex Anderson, and Libby Lehman. On Friday night of the seminar, Ricky gives an inspirational concert featuring his piano, Native American flute and storytelling. If you are interested in attending you still have time to sign up for Ricky's upcoming Super Seminars in Asheville, NC and New Orleans, LA. Cheryl says, "one of the most eye-opening and amazing things I've ever done!" Roseline says, "all teachers gave clear instructions and the whole seminar was amazing. Whoo-hoo!"  Ricky is curating a special exhibit called All That Jazz: Improvisational Quilts. This unique collection of quilts will be displayed at the Road to California 2012 Show - "The Best Quilt Show in the West" - from January 19-22, 2012. Anyone wishing to submit a quilt for this exhibit is welcome to do so providing the work is an improvisational design. Deadline for submitting is September 30, 2011. Whoo-hoo!
