INFORMATION

To make a Convergence Quilt that is either a Harmonic Convergence or a Grand Convergence where at least 1/4 of the fabric used in the quilt features the Mystery Challenge Fabric. General instructions for making both the Harmonic Convergence and the Grand Convergence will be included with the challenge fabric when shipped.

The Prizes

Grand Prize - An award certificate, one-yard of each of the Ricky Tims Hand-dyed fabrics - 47 yards in total, plus $250 - a $1425 Value

Best Harmonic Convergence - An award certificate, 10 Yards of Ricky Tims Hand-dyed fabric of your choosing, plus $50. A $300 Value

Best Grand Convergence - An award certificate, 10 Yards of Ricky Tims Hand-dyed fabric of your choosing, plus $50. A $300 Value

The Top Ten Finalists - In addition to the three top prizes, ten additional quilts will be selected and featured as the top ten finalists.

All 13 of the prize-winning quilts (the three prize-winners and the top ten finalists) will be featured in a special article on the Ricky Tims blog and newsletter and on the Daily Blog at TheQuiltShow.com.

The Online Mystery Convergence Challenge

Entry Fee - $25 (plus shipping). The entry fee includes general construction method instructions for both Harmonic Convergence and Grand Convergence and one yard of one of the following Ricky Tims Hand-dyed Fabrics:

• Multi-Caveman Brite

• Sea Maiden

• Rivendell

NOTE: All fabrics are hand-dyed. The color tonality and color shifts in each fabric are the same. The pattern varies greatly from piece to piece. The above images are representative of our fabrics.

• Fire Dragon

Rules

1. One quarter of the the fabric used in the quilt top must be from the Mystery Challenge Fabric.

2. Other fabrics (hand-dyed or commercial) are acceptable.

3. The quilt can be any size as long as it is 16” or more on any side.

4. The challenge fabric may not be altered (no over-dyeing, painting etc.).

5. Other fabrics used in the quilt may be altered (over-dyed, painted, etc.)

6. Appliqué is acceptable.

7. Submitted quilts must be totally finished (quilted and bound).

8. Embellishments are acceptable.

Entry Information and Timeline

Step 1 - Order Your Fabric - CLOSED

1. Everyone purchasing the Mystery Challenge Fabric at the Online Store at www.rickytims.com will be eligible to submit a finished quilt. Your purchase puts you into our Online Mystery Convergence Challenge database. Deadline for purchasing the Mystery Convergence Quilt Entry Fabric is September 15, 2016.

2. You will receive a one-yard piece of one of the four challenge fabrics. You will also receive a set of general instructions describing how to make either the Harmonic Convergence or the Grand Convergence.

3. If you are ambitious, you may order two challenge fabrics and submit two quilts for the challenge. A maximum of two entries per person is allowed. You may not submit two entries having only purchased one challenge fabric. Each purchased Mystery Challenge Fabric represents one quilt submission.

4. Two entries maximum per person. Two entries requires the purchase of two Mystery Challenge Fabrics.

5. No more than two people may work on one submission.

6. The last day to purchase the Mystery Challenge Fabric for entry is September 15, 2016.

Step 2 - Make your Quilt(s)

1. Before starting, refer to the rules listed on this page.

2. Using the guidelines/instructions that are provided with your fabric, you will create your own variation of a Convergence quilt. If you have my book (Convergence Quilts, by C&T Publishing), it also contains instructions for both the Harmonic Convergence and the Grand Convergence. You are welcome to refer to it if you have it.

3. You are welcome to incorporate additional fabrics. Refer to the rules.

4. Images of your Mystery Convergence Challenges quilts, whether in progress or completed, may not be published in any manner, including on the internet via blogs or other social media, until after October 15, 2016.

Step 3 - Submit your Entry

1. You can make either a Harmonic Convergence or a Grand Convergence. If you wish to submit two entries, you can make two Harmonic Convergence quilts or two Grand Convergence quilts. Alternatively you may make one of each.

2. The online submission form will open on September 15th, 2016. This is where final registration information and photos will be uploaded and submitted. You will receive an email reminder and a link when the online submission form goes live on August 15th.

3. The submission deadline is midnight (USA Mountain Time) October 15, 2016. After that time, the online submission form will become inactive.

4. Each submission will require two photos: a digital photo of the full quilt (including edge treatment) and a detail photo.

5. Prize winners will be announce on November 7th, 2016.

Below are examples of Convergence Quilts with descriptions. Study these quilts to get inspiration for innovation and surprise for your Mystery Convergence Challenge Quilt.

Note:

This is an online quilt challenge. The quilts will not need to be shipped for exhibition. Images of the quilt submissions may be used for marketing purposes for Ricky Tims Inc and its affiliates.

Genesis is a basic Harmonic Convergence quilt made by Ricky Tims. It is made entirely from hand-dyed fabric.

Firestorm is also basic Harmonic Convergence quilt made by Ricky Tims. Except for the skinny inner border, it is made entirely from a one-yard piece of hand-dyed fabric.

Nebula by Ricky Tims is an example of a Harmonic Convergence made by Ricky Tims using multi-colored fabric, set on point, with a circle, swoops, and borders.

Allemande by Ricky Tims is a small Grand Convergence made by Ricky Tims using only hand-dyed fabrics. Notice that a grand converge doesn't have the 'grid effect' that is typical of a Harmonic Convergence. Here the steps are sliced in equal widths. This is small but effective. Convergence quilts can be any size.

Bolero by Ricky Tims is a Grand Convergence made from only hand-dyed fabrics. The interaction of two designs is typical of a Grand Convergence. Here again the strips are sliced in equal widths. The body of the quilt was constructed with the Grand Convergence method. The borders were added after that so that the swoops were created as an effect to continue into the borders. The borders were not created as part of the main body, they were totally separate.

This is the body of a Grand Convergence with no borders added. Notice that the deign containing the concentric circles is cut in strips that are equal widths, but the inserted strips are narrow in the middle and getting wider as they move to the outside edges.

Convergence Quilts by Others

Floral Medly by Alice E. Hill. This is an all-pieced Harmonic Convergence quilt using four fabrics. One of the fabrics is a large scale print. Notice how Alice fussy-cut her large print so the design would flow out into the border. Also, notice how she created a partial convergence to flow into the top border. Innovation and surprise is a bonus.

Lombok Sunset by Diane Romera. This is a Harmonic Convergence Quilt featuring commercial fabric mixed with hand-dyed fabric. It has minimal appliqué and interesting piecing in the border. Getting creative is a bonus.

Sultry Susans by Terry Waldron. This Harmonic Convergence quilt just glows. The appliqué takes center stage and the convergence recedes into the background. The border on the right side adds such wonderful interest.

Into the Light by Lee Paget of England. Lee has used a butterfly theme fabric for the Harmonic Convergence and then used broderie perse appliqué with the butterflies on top. It's a magical quilt. Simple and so effective.

Challenge Rules

Your design must be totally original, or an original setting of a traditional, non-copyrighted quilt pattern. All entries must be completely finished when submitted. The quilt must be three layers, front, batting, and a back layer.
Fabrics

Caveman Pastel - the Miracle Fabric must be the dominantly featured light fabric in your quilt top. Other light fabrics are acceptable as long as the Miracle Fabric is dominant.
Additional Ricky Tims' hand-dyed fabrics, your own hand-dyes, or commercial fabrics may be used.
Quilt must be no smaller than 24 inches on any side.

No alteration to the color of the Miracle Fabric is permitted such as over-dying, bleaching, painting, tea-dyeing etc., or any other means of altering the original color of the fabric is not allowed.
Embellishments in the way of beads, attachments, sequins, etc. are permitted.
Designs based on traditional blocks as well as contemporary art quilt designs are all eligible.
Construction techniques should be patchwork, applique, a combination of both or whole cloth.
Dimensions: No smaller than 24" on any side.
Quilt must be made entirely by one person - from start to finish.
Quilts can be made by hand or machine or a combination of both.

One winner will receive ten pieces (one yard each) of Ricky Tims' hand dyed fabrics of their choice, a $200 value

Submission Information

You will find this information listed at www.rickytims.com under the EVENTS menu.
Cost for submitting is free.
Entries must be submitted online before midnight MST March 28,2014.
You may enter as many times as you like, but each online submission is for one entry.
Entry requires mid-to-high quality digital photo images.
The entries will be judged by photo submission.
A well-photographed submission enables your quilt to receive the best evaluation.
Two images are required per submission: one flat full shot including borders and binding (or other edge finish treatment) and one flat detail shot.
Images must be standard .jpg no larger than 8mb.
The submission button will become inactive at midnight, MST, on March 28, 2014. Once the link is inactive, the submission deadline has passed.
