We went to Nairobi Africa in Oct. 2007 and i was so sick that I could not eat any of the food at the Carnivore Rest. On our last day in Nairobi though I had out guide take us down town to a material store so that I could buy some material and bring home. I am finally going to use that material in a quilt I have made. We went through a different tour-Graduate. We stayed at airobi Safari Club; Amboseli Sopa, Tarangire, Manyara and Ngorongor and Serengeti, Masai Mara, Naivasha Sopa and finally back to Nairobi to come home. It was really a fantastic trip and then we went back to Botswanna but that was in 2009 or so. We really liked the areas we visited and seeing your album brought back some beautiful memories. Thanks for sharing. Jane

I've been there, done all the things you mention, balloon ride, Carnivore restaurant, safaris, etc. Be very cautious in Nairobi, it is a dangerous city. Make sure you have plenty of picture-taking supplies, don't drink the water, ice cubes, unpeeled fruit, etc. Carry an antibiotic, antidiarrheal, and a pain-killer, and then enjoy the fabulous, people, landscape, birds, animals, and pre-history. We went with Ambercrombie and Kent and had a life-altering trip with absolutely no mis-adventures!

I have been to Kenya twice and loved both trips. The first trip, the guide was able to get us increbibly close to wildlife including a lion who had just finished dinner of wildabeast, cheetah lazing in the sunshine, and a Mara crossing with 5 hungry gators waiting for the zebra and wildabeast to take the plunge. The second time I visited, I spent more time in the villages and schools. I actually spent three days in a village -- one day with the women doing their daily chores/activiti es, one day at the local school (walked there with the kids), and one day during a holiday celebration. The people are very warm and inviting but also very poor. It was a humbling experience. Things do not make wealth...

Oh, and one more memory I just had: We went with friends, and one of the highlights was going to (then) Zaire to the Virungas, where we hiked hours every day to sit with the mountain gorillas. We had a ranger guiding us and another following up in the rear. The ranger behind carried a powerful rifle, presumably to save us from attack. However, one day after a long time of slogging through the mud and not yet finding our gorilla group, the friend with us said that he had an epiphany: the ranger with the gun was there in case any of us humans stumbled and couldn't continue. We would be put down so as not to slow down the hike! By the way, all the mud-slogging was totally worth it as soon as we encountered the gentle giants.

I've been to Karen Blixen's home, what a dream for me after being enchanted by her book for many years! We also took a balloon ride across the Masai Mara, while staying at Little Governor's Camp, a luxurious tented retreat. Every morning at Little Governors', a gentleman woke us with tea and biscuits. We rose before dawn and had three game drives per day. Mt. Kenya Safari Club is gorgeous and such history! I loved Treetops, partly because that's where Princess Elizabeth was staying when George VI died and she became Queen Elizabeth, but also because you stay awake all night watching the animals come to drink at the waterholes. The whole trip was more than I ever dreamed it would be--in fact, I was a little apprehensive about it before going, because it is so very FAR and so different from anything I'd ever experienced, but that little bit of fear vanished as soon as we checked into the Norfolk Hotel in Nairobi. Pure joy, the whole trip!

You will experience the beauty of Africa. Landing in Nairobi will bring you over the slums which stretch for miles. The poverty is great. The Blixen home is set in a wonderful acreage. Nanyuki and the Mt. Kenya Safari Club are fantastic. I have a cool picture of a peacock in full display from about 10 feet away. The safari rides can't be beat. You will see so many animals. My favorite is the giraffe. A lion walked by our jeep and it seemed I could just pat it on the head. Definitely not what you want to do! On our ballon ride we saw hippos in the river and flew over lions. Our champaign breakfast was served in the bush after we landed and we were surrounded by guards with powerful guns. The lions were a bit close. It was a great trip. Words cannot do it justice. Just enjoy every minute and you will have a lifetime of memories. Imodium was my friend! Only negative comment for me. Safe travels. No worries.

We went in early 2008 to go over the details for our quilt exhibit that we had in Canada displaying their quilts. It was more then we could have hoped for and the land and people left a lasting impression. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did. All the best to you and Justin.

I've been to Karen Blixen's home/museum. It's a very peaceful place and the Ngong Hills are beautiful from the front porch. You can walk around the property and see pieces of old machinery and such. Mostly you can feel the love she had for the people and the land. The Carnivore is good fun. A word of caution - take SMALL pieces of each thing first and get more of your favorites. Piper's fave was warthog. One of mine was zebra (sadly so Jody!). There are plenty of cats wandering around the tables so you can push the bits you don't want off to them. Pace yourself! I had a gorgeous view of Mt Kenya from the top of Mt Kilimanjaro. You'll love it! Have fun but be careful. Locks and doxycycline are your friends!! Jen

I have always wanted to go to Africa since I was a child - never been - but wowie I hope you have a wonderful time...I couldn't tell you everything I would want to see - I would just want to absorb as much as I could - the wildlife, the landscape, the cultures, the sounds, the smells - just everything. To touch the earth and the water - and just see the stars there.

Perfect! Last night on PBS I watched a follow-up documentary to the movie "Born Free" which some of us will remember from 50 years ago! Yes, 50 they said! The country was beautiful and once again the story of all the lions rehabilitated was delightful to watch. The sad part was the ending -- and that much of that land is now lion-free. Down from 10,000 to 200 today. Glad you are only shooting pictures!
