Northern Lights
by Ricky Tims

Over the years I have often been smitten by antique quilts featured in  books or magazines. Looking through a book, The Darwin D. Bearly Collection: Antique Ohio Amish Quilt (©2006 Darwin D. Bearly and BERNINA), I saw a photo of a quilt that was calling my name. It was based on a Nine Patch, with the blocks set on point in a traditional Streak of the Lightning set. My multi-color fabric was perfect for my vision and I used those in such a way that allowed the color to change and flow down each vertical column.

This is a perfect quilt for both traditional and contemporary quilt makers. Using speedy-cut methods and strip piecing, it comes together in a flash.

Quilt Size: 87 7/8 x 92 1/8 inches.

Both versions are only $14.98

On my daily walk today. they had finally opened the track at the football stadium. It has been closed for several weeks for summer maintenance and who would think that at 5:30 in the morning anyone would be there? But this morning the football boys and their coaches were there getting ready to work out. I'm sure there was much celebration to be able to get back on the field after working out for weeks in a field.

Trying to keep it simple - because that's the goal. I like the simple texture on the wall and chose to frame the grasses heavily to the left. Only basic Lr edits.

Week 25, A Dream

If you are going to have "a dream", then DREAM BIG & IN COLOR"! This is a shot of the side of a building in North Tampa I took on Father's Day when Gayle & I were headed to my daughter's home for a family get-together. I have passed by this many times in the past and always thought it would be cool to use if an appropriate challenge presented itself. And it did thanks to Ricky!!

This 'Dream Big' mural is Diamond View Studios' call for business inspiration, but became my inspiration for this weeks' challenge topic. In 2015, Diamond View bought the unfinished building — full of reclaimed brick from a Virginia road — out of foreclosure, and built out the interior worthy of recognition as Tampa Bay Business Journal’s Coolest Office Space in 2016. To me, the exterior is the crowning touch, not only because of its message, but also by the visual aesthetics.

Of course, I had to apply my "a la Rocky" touches and ended up doing an invert of the colors to make this "a dream" type of thing that I would see "in my dreams"...

Dream on my brothers and sisters!! PEACE

Plan: Photos of some mandarin ducks in our neighborhood pond. Unfortunately, those mandrain ducks swan toward the shadows of trees on the pond and was too far for me to capture any good photographs of them. I look around and found a neighbor's sprinkler was on. The water spray against the Sun forming some sort of mist which drew my attention. I used ICM to create this abstract image. LR basic, adj colors.

Today as I was working on this challenge the day was filled with rain and fog and mystery all over the mountain. I took several Nikon photos and worked on doing double exposure blending to create a fantasy. My efforts were ok, but fell short. Tonight as I was taking the dogs out for the final time, the solar lights and my little table sitting area became a wonderful subject. I ended up experimenting with my iPhone to do some rotation with long exposure and then I also did a fairly straight shot are used an image blending app to do the double exposure to create a feeling of a drain in this foggy dusky setting

By increasing the exposure, I was surprised to see this plant looked as if it had been painted. Otherwise no changes were made except to crop it and give it a subdued frame.

The last telephone in our house that has one of these annoying cords is on the way out! For so many years, I fussed with the cord as it tried to curl up the wrong way or form knots on its own. Sometimes I lament the loss of older, treasured items in my home. However, this daily struggle with an obstinant phone cord is not a treasured memory. Long live the cell phone!

I thought the background fabric looked kind of prehistoric---just like the phone cord. I duplicated the layer and desaturated the top layer. I used Color Burn blend mode at 88% opacity. After flattening the layers, I adjusted shadows and highlights.

I'm doing my dangdest to have a garden on the mountain. Curernly I have two very robust lupine plants. Rather than doing one big radial symmetry - I opted to have a little dance of several.

Stars and Stripes Forever
Designed by Ricky Tims
Made by Cyndi McChesney

Many moons ago when I was just starting to quilt, I joined a block exchange group at my local guild in St. Louis. When it was my turn to share a pattern, I designed my own pieced star block—but there was a twist. The points of the stars were in the adjoining blocks. At the time, I loved big prints o I gave the guidelines to use large prints, yellow in certain patches, and red in certain patches. I provided the blue and lavender fabrics. That quilt is shown at the bottom of the article. The quilt top was set aside and during my move to Colorado, the quilt was essentially lost in boxes that never got unpacked.

Fast forward
I was invited to create a quilt for Quilted in Honor and decided that this star quilt pattern would be a great option. However, there was only one problem...I didn't have that pattern...nor could I find the original quilt to use to redraft the pattern. So I had to work from scratch and do my best to redraw the block from memory. Stars and Stripes shown here is that revised version. It is created in America patriotic colors. The patten, however, was designed to be versatile and  not just patriotic. To see an alternative color way, you will need to solve the jigsaw puzzle.

What happened to the quilt top?
It was discovered and I realized that it never got a border. Fortunately, there were still leftover fabrics in the bag with the quilt top so I was able to create a border for it.
