To my Quilting Friends:  What a Summer it has been!

As I looked at my message from the last newsletter that spoke about 2003 having brought two new firsts for me, I realized that this year too, has brought a tremendous first for me in the form of my new Quilting Seminar.  The first two seminars in St. Louis , Missouri and Golden, Colorado took place in August and I’m pleased to say that from the amount of positive and encouraging feedback, they were a great success.  I now know that my instincts were right and this is how I should be teaching.  It feels wonderful not only to see a dream realized but to have others experience and enjoy it with you.

Again I find myself saying that I am so grateful.  I am grateful to Bernina for their continued support and encouragement.  Grateful for the overwhelming support of the Thimbles & Thread Quilt Guild in St. Louis and the Columbine Quilt Guild in Golden for getting this new format off the ground and tested; and to all of you who are now excited about the coming year’s seminars.  Thank you all so much.

I am really looking forward to conducting my seminar in Houston this fall and next year in Alberta, Canada; Charlotte, NC; Arroyo Grande, CA; & Phoenix, AZ.  I’d love to see all of you at one of these events.  I’m just beginning to work on the seminar schedule for 2006 and have been pleased with the number of guilds wanting to host one of these seminars.  Keep an eye on the web calendar for the future dates and a location of one of the seminars near you.  If you would like more info about the seminars, please click on the following link to be directed to the seminar page. http://www.rickytims.com/ricky_tims_quilt_seminar.htm

Sometime in the future, we will be posting quotes and pictures on the website, but until that time, here are just a couple of comments from the previous two seminars:

“First of all, I want to say that I have attended many seminars around the whole country during the past 14 years, and your seminar was by far the best one I have ever been to – bar none!  One of the best parts of the seminar was at the very beginning – receiving the notebook full of everything we would need for the next two days and beyond.  The setting in the large room with the big screen was wonderful.  Our notebooks contained everything that was projected on the screen – making note taking unnecessary.  We were able to listen without having to write notes – and that made for a seminar that we were able to listen and not miss a thing.”

“Where to begin???  I had a wonderful time at the seminar… have had quilts spinning in my head all weekend!  I loved all the demonstrations , and being able to see what was going on at the machine and cutting table… so much better than standing around a machine and trying to see over everyone.  I have to tell you that normally, during a regular class, I don’t have as much fun, because I am stressing about whether I’m doing things correctly, or “mine doesn’t look like yours”… you know… all that sort of whining thing we all do!  During your seminar, with the demonstrations, combined with the notebook, I was able to clearly see what you were doing and therefore able to “get it” a good deal quicker than if it were the normal classroom setting and we were distracted by our own cutting and sewing and peeking at our neighbor’s work.  In addition, I have the notebook to refer to here at home!”

Ricky Tims Quilt Seminars:  Volunteers for Houston needed
On Thursday and Friday, November 4 & 5, Ricky will be conducting his Ricky Tims Quilt Seminar which is presented by Bernina of America at the International Quilt Festival in Houston , TX .  Registrations by mail are due into Quilts, INC no later than October 1, 2004 so there’s still time.  Please note that since the International Quilt Festival is hosting this event, all registrations are to be me made through them and NOT through Tims Art Quilt Studio.

As with all the Ricky Tims Quilt Seminars, Ricky and the crew will need help with the seminar while at Houston .  They will need approximately 10 volunteers to help-out on Thursday and Friday, November 4 & 5.  Volunteers will be given ½ price registration in exchange for their help in setting-up the seminar on Wednesday afternoon and then again during the 2 seminar days working as white glove angels, ushers, and shadows for Ricky and Justin.

The shadows and ushers need to be able to move about quickly from place to place and may need to carry light-weight items or relay messages.  The angels will be stationed in the Ricky Tims Quilt Gallery to show participants various parts of the quilts.  Experience at the two previous seminars has indicated that volunteers miss very little, if any, of the seminar.

If you are going to be in Houston this year and would like to be a volunteer or have questions about volunteering, please email Pat Vassallo at pat@rickytims.com  or call her at 303-252-0579 (M,W,F 9am to noon, MST).  Your name will be provided to the registration group at Festival so that you can receive your ½ priced registration.  DO NOT contact Quilts Inc. or the International Quilt Festival about being a volunteer.

Travels:  Tupelo , MS ; Kalamazoo & Lansing , MI; Bel Air, Maryland
The month of September has already seen Ricky off to Tupelo , Mississippi where he was a keynote presenter at Martha Pullen’s fundraiser for St. Jude’s Children Hospital.  Mid-month, he’ll be off to Kalamazoo, Michigan, where he will be visiting the Log Cabin Quilters Guild from September 14-15; then the Capital City Quilt Guild in Lansing, Michigan on September 16-18;  followed by the Flying Geese Quilt Guild in Bel Air, Maryland on September 20-22.  If you’re in the area, drop by and say “hi”.

This summer has just flown by for Ricky.  In June, he visited the Minnesota Quilters Show and Conference in Rochester followed by Bernina University in Atlanta , GA.   In July, Ricky was at  BJ’s Quilt Basket & Bernina Center in Bend , OR and then on to Camp Watch A Patcher in Irvine , CA .  Of course in August, Ricky had his first two Ricky Tims Quilt Seminars in both St. Louis and Golden.

Many thanks from Ricky to all of those involved for for their efforts in making these trips so enjoyable and successful.

Quilts, Quilts, Quilts : Dad’s Lone Star; Fire Dragon Rhapsody; and Glen Eyrie Castle Quilt
Ricky is excited that this fall,  Dad’s Lone Star and Fire Dragon Rhapsody has been juried into IQA Judged Show this fall in Houston, TX.  In addition, the Glen Eyrie Castle Quilt will be included in the Tactile Architecture competition.

Dad’s Lone Star is a collaborative effort between Ricky and his dad, Richard.  Using hand-dyed fabrics, Ricky’s dad pieced the lone star in the center of the quilt and Ricky created the setting and machine quilted the quilt.

Fire Dragon Rhapsody is the newest quilt in Ricky’s Rhapsody Quilt collection.  On a recent trip to Pueblo , CO , Ricky was inspired by an impression of a dragon he saw on a window grate on one of the downtown buildings.

As many of you may know, Ricky’s annual Rocky Mountain Quilt Retreat is held each October at the Glen Eyrie Castle in Colorado Springs , CO .  The Glen Eyrie Castle Quilt is a result of one of the attendees commissioning Ricky to create a quilt about the retreat.  Using a series of photographs and a photo editing software, Ricky came up with a design and using hand-dyed fabrics and his raw-edge, “scribble appliqué” technique, creating a beautiful, soft texture resulting in wonderful imagery of the historic castle.

In other quilting news, Ricky is pleased to announce that Bohemian Rhapsody has recently won Best of Show at he Quilting on the Waterfront in Duluth , MN . Best of Show is quite an honor at any event, particularly one as well attended as this one and Ricky is extremely pleased that Bohemian Rhapsody continues to impress and enchant quilters all over.

2005 Opening:  Workshop Opportunity
An opening has occurred in Ricky’s 2005 calendar, and he would like to offer it for consideration.  The dates available are Monday, Tuesday, and  Wednesday – January 3-5.  Please email Pat at pat@rickytims.com  quickly if your guild would like to book Ricky on these dates.

Razzle Dazzle® by Superior Threads : 13 new Colors
Later this month, Superior Threads will roll out 13 new colors to add to the previous 12 or Ricky’s new Razzle Dazzle® decorative threads.  These high quality, wonderfully soft decorative threads are used in bobbin quilting, couching, and other embellishment work (anything that doesn’t require it to go through your sewing machine needle).  Keep an eye on the Ricky’s Internet Store to view these beautiful new colors.

Top Dog 2005 : Katie P.
When Justin went to Charlie’s one afternoon in January to buy a few groceries, he noticed a small poster on the door, of a sad looking, dejected shepherd type dog, with a caption above it stating “time is running out, please find me a home”.  Although Justin and Ricky had discussed getting a dog sometime in the future, (and certainly not one that would shed profusely);  they hadn’t quite thought it would be so soon after their move to La Veta, CO.  However, after seeing the caption, Justin, the animal lover he is, headed straight to town hall to inquire about the dog in their animal shelter.  After coaxing the timid dog to the gate, Justin immediately went and got Ricky to look at the dog and to get his opinion about adopting her.  Although at first, neither were too taken with the timid dog, the thought of having a such a shy, innocent creature “put-down” was almost too much to bear.  Justin went back to town hall, paid the fee, and the little shepherd/lab mix came to live with Justin and Ricky.

After trying numerous names, the dog finally showed interest when Justin called her Katie.  Of course, the “P”, was added to her name not too soon afterwards because her demeanor reminded Justin of a really nice woman he met a few years back. (There is more to this story but in lieu of emabarrassing this nice lady, we’ll leave it at this!)

The ladies at town hall had infomed Justin that the dog had been abandoned on the highway and that it took them nearly a week to catch her.  Although she had been through quite an ordeal, she adapted very quickly to the guys and soon realized that she “was home”.

One morning while Ricky was taking Katie P. for her morning “ritual”, he snapped a picture of Katie P. in front of the house with the mountains near La Veta in the background.   Later that day,  Ricky emailed the picture to a friend of his who promptly told Ricky that he should enter the picture into the Page-A-Day® Dog Calendar contest by Workman Publishing of New York, NY.  The only problem, was the deadline was three days away.  No worries, Ricky printed the contest rules and form from their website, filled them out, and Justin overnighted them to New York the next day.

About two months later, Justin received a call from Workman Publishing wanting to know if they called Katie P. – Katie or Katie P.  No other information was divulged other than she thought that Katie P. might make the calendar.  That was great news but it only whetted their appetite.

In August, on the way to St. Louis for the first Seminar, the guys stopped in Pueblo to see if one of the chain bookstores had the calendar.  They did and sitting on the floor, Justin and Ricky started looking through the calendar to see if Katie P. did make the cut.  The excitement was just too much to take the time to go to one of the tables mind you.  Ricky told Justin to look in December since it was a “snowy” picture.  December 1 -31, page by page, no Katie P.  Not totally dejected yet, Justin said he would start from page 1 and go page by page until he either found her or he reached the end of the calendar.  The search didn’t take long, for Katie’s picture was not on page 1 which had Saturday/Sunday, January 1&2, but instead; the full page picture of January 3.  Beaming with “pride” that their little girl made the calendar, they then noticed that at the bottom of the page, was a blue banner stating 1st Prize Winner.  However,  things only got better. Reading the text from Workman Publishing next to the picture, they read that not only was she selected as the 1st prize winner, but was voted TOP DOG for 2005!

Who would have thought that a simple little trip to the grocery store would result in finding something so special that would bring so much joy and happiness to the guys!  Katie P. is very happy and well adjusted and both Ricky and Justin have not just the pet they wanted, but something very extraordinary!

And by the way, Katie P. OWNS Autumn Rock!!!!!
